Athletic Director, Head Mens and Womens Basketball Coach

Bio

Stanley Asumnu is in his fourth seasonas Athletic Director and Head Men’s & Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of Arkansas Cossatot. Asunmu joined the Colts from Texas A&M International University, where he served as Assistant Women's Basketball Coach from September 2021 to August 2022.

Before his stint in Laredo, Asumnu served as Varsity Girls Basketball First Assistant Coach at Sharyland High School in Misssion, Texas, from August 2017 to June 2019, then becoming Varsity Boys Basketball First Assistant Coach for the following two seasons. 

At TAMIU, Asumnu implemented principles from his select traveling basketball team program, Valley Rebels Elite. Through both his positions, he provided individualized training, development and preparation for collegiate level basketball programs.

Asumnu spent his college years at the University of Tennessee, starting games in parts of all four seasons under head coaches Buzz Peterson and Bruce Pearl. His best season came as a senior in 2005-06, averaging eight points a game while making 15 starts for the Volunteers while they won the SEC East and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Following his basketball career, Asumnu spent one year on the UT football team as a wide receiever in 2006. Asumnu graduated from Tennessee with a degree in sports management and minor in business administration. Originally from Houston, Asumnu won three state championships with Westbury Christian High School before spending one year at Hargrave Military Academy.

After his college days, Asumnu spent four seasons with the NBA D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers from 2007-2011, wherehe participated in numerous player appearances, basketball clinics, charity events and community outreach events to connect with underrepresented students and their parents. Asumnualso spent time in 2011 with the Sandringham Sabres in Australia, helping them to the playoffs.

From 2012-2015, Asumnu coached various sports such as football, soccer and basketball at Idea Mission Public School, before serving as 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach and 8th Grade Girls Basketball Assistant Coach at B.L. Gray JR High School for the 2016-17 season.

In addition to his coaching positions, Asumnu was the founder of the Valley Rebels Organization, leading boys and girls travel basketball teams, with nine of his players signing college basketball scholarships. Asumnu has also been a USA Basketball Gold License Coach since 2016.

Asumnu is committed to inspiring on and off the court and has been involved with several community events such as youth basketball clinics, player appearances, and charity events working with kids with disabilities. His motto in life is "you must expect great things of yourself before you can do them" from the great Michael Jordan.
